Dear Friends,

The annual Digital Essay Competition (DEC) is on again in 2024 in Kenya. We're currently developing questions for learners to share their ideas and perspectives through essays in the following categories: Kiswahili, English, Art, Kenyan Sign Language, braille, French, German, and Arabic.

We are opening up the 2024 process with two calls to action. First, we invite DEC alumni, teachers, parents, caregivers, and stakeholders in education to share their reflections, suggestions, and feedback to make DEC more inclusive in 2024. Second, we welcome anyone interested in sponsoring DEC 2024 to help more learners with and without disabilities to participate. You are welcome to join us in recognizing winners and their teachers during the Nairobi International Book Fair in September. If you would like to be part of DEC in 2024, please reach out to us at essaycontest@ekitabu.com.

Over the past 12 years, DEC has engaged over 79,000 students in writing, as well as their teachers, across all 47 counties of Kenya as well as in the refugee camps of Dadaab and Kakuma. Since its launch in 2013, DEC has been approved by Kenya Ministry of Education (MOE). The Competition encourages students to write, and it recognizes and rewards students and the teachers who support them for sharing their ideas and original voices in essays and art. DEC prizes include scholarship money, computing devices, certificates, gift hampers, and national recognition with Kenya MOE.

The DEC 2024 question will be released in April, and the submission platform will remain through July. We're excited to support the creative development of writers this year. Please keep an eye on essay.eKitabu.com for Competition updates.

Warmest regards,
Will
