The Prix de l’Édition Jeunesse Africaine is a literary award created to spotlight French-language children’s publishing across Africa. Launched in 2025 by Maua Books, an imprint of eKitabu in Nairobi, the prize was born out of collaboration among Francophone publishers at the Forum des éditeurs jeunesse d’Afrique in Lomé, Togo. Its mission is to strengthen the visibility of Francophone children’s literature and build bridges with Anglophone communities, ensuring that young readers across the continent can access diverse stories that reflect African cultures and experiences.

The prize is structured around several categories that capture the breadth of children’s publishing: premières lectures (early readers), romans jeunesse (children’s novels), romans ados (teen novels), and a mention spéciale (special recognition). In its inaugural year, 107 titles were submitted by Francophone publishers, and a jury of ten French professors based in Kenya reviewed the entries. This rigorous process highlights the seriousness of the award and its commitment to quality and cultural resonance.

Beyond recognition, the prize carries significant cultural and educational weight. It encourages the circulation of French-language children’s books in regions where they were previously less accessible, such as Kenya. By doing so, it not only supports French-language learning but also fosters cross-cultural exchange between Francophone and Anglophone communities. This makes the award a powerful tool for bridging linguistic divides and enriching the literary landscape for African youth.

Ultimately, the Prix de l’Édition Jeunesse Africaine is more than a prize—it is a platform for empowerment. It gives African publishers visibility, validates their creative work, and promotes diversity in children’s literature. By celebrating stories that resonate with African identities and experiences, the award contributes to shaping a generation of readers who see themselves reflected in the books they read, while also opening doors for these stories to travel beyond their local contexts.
Premières lectures – This category focuses on early readers, books designed for children who are just beginning to engage with written language. They emphasize simplicity, clarity, and engaging illustrations to support literacy development.
Romans jeunesse – Dedicated to children’s novels, this category highlights longer narratives that capture the imagination of middle-grade readers. These stories often blend adventure, humor, and cultural themes to resonate with young audiences.
Romans ados – Aimed at teenagers, this category celebrates novels that tackle more complex themes relevant to adolescence, such as identity, friendship, and social challenges, while still remaining accessible and engaging.
Mention spéciale – This special recognition category allows the jury to honor works that stand out for originality, cultural significance, or innovation, even if they don’t fit neatly into the other categories.
