On Wednesday 25th November, The Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) in collaboration with eKitabu held the Remote Learning Challenge (RLC) Award ceremony in Zoom meeting to award Mathematics and Science teachers and the County Trainer for the best innovative ICT practices in remote learning challenge. In attendance were Government of Kenya Officials, Teachers Service Commission, eKitabu partners, teachers, and invited guests. 2020 marked the first annual RLC Award ceremony.

The 2020 RLC National Winners in Mathematics and Science Teachers Category

  • Nasra Mohamed, Grand Prize Winner from Changamwe Secondary School in Mombasa County. Nasra won 100,000 Kshs, a laptop, trophies, a certificate, and a gift hamper
  • Erick Onyango, 1st Runner-Up Winner from Maranda High School in Siaya County. Erick won 70,000 Kshs, a laptop, trophies, a certificate, and a gift hamper
  • Jane Mbithe, 2nd Runner-Up Winner from Kenya High School, Nairobi County. Jane won 50,000 Kshs, a laptop, trophies, a certificate, and a gift hamper

The 2020 RLC National Winners in County Trainers Category

  • Fred Bongu, Grand Prize Winner from Coast Girls School in Mombasa County. Fred won 100,000 Kshs, a laptop, trophies, a certificate, and a gift hamper
  • Evans Ngoge, 1st Runner-Up Winner from Nyariacho Mixed School in Nyamira County. Evans won 70,000 Kshs, a laptop, trophies, a certificate, and a gift hamper
  • Joseph Songok, 2nd Runner-Up Winner from St Francis Girls Chepterit, Nandi County. Joseph won 50,000 Kshs, a laptop, trophies, a certificate, and a gift hamper

The Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) has trained over 11,000 mathematics and science teachers online countrywide since the Covid-19 pandemic struck in March, interrupting its erstwhile face to face programs. The new norm online in-service Education and Training (INSET) using Google Classroom system to capacity build teachers on innovative pedagogy has in the same period honed 1,163 County Trainers in all the 47 devolved units.“Besides the awards, it was by dint of collaboration between eKitabu and CEMASTEA that an online competition was conceived and introduced to enable teachers to develop and deliver content online to learners using a suitable learning management system. The competition started at the County level and proceeded to the Regional and National levels.” CEMASTEA Director, Jacinta Akatsa.“It calls for professional flexibility, patience, personal strength, and endurance to deliver in unpredictable circumstances where technology such as the internet can suddenly fail midstream. Teaching remotely is truly challenging and only the best and dedicated can excel.” The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Director of Quality Assurance, Dr. Reuben Nthamburi.Eight top teachers and trainers from the eight regions each received a laptop, a trophy, and a certificate of excellence.
