On May 14–15, 2026, the Thika Primary School for the Blind and Thika High School for the Blind became the historic stage for Africa’s first-ever Regional Braille Challenge. The groundbreaking event gathered over 700 visually impaired learners from across Kenya to showcase their tactile literacy skills under the inspiring theme, "Dots of Kenya: Where Every Dot Tells Our Story". As a proud partner in this monumental initiative, eKitabu joined hands with the Braille Institute and the Clovernook Center for the Blind & Visually Impaired to celebrate the academic brilliance and resilience of these young scholars.
The two-day competition pushed the boundaries of tactile learning, putting students to the test in reading comprehension, spelling, and proofreading entirely through touch. For everyone at eKitabu, watching these learners navigate complex texts and interpret tactile charts with absolute precision was a powerful validation of our core mission to leave no learner behind through accessible, inclusive education. Beyond the intense academic matches, the atmosphere in Thika was a vibrant celebration of ability, featuring energetic choir performances, student dance-offs, and thrilling goalball games.
As the regional scores are finalized, the stakes remain high for these talented participants. According to the foundational framework established by the Braille Institute, the top-scoring students look forward to the ultimate academic reward: a coveted invitation to travel to Los Angeles, California, to compete in the Global Braille Challenge Finals. Standing among the top 50 blind and visually impaired students from around the world, finalists will experience an unforgettable weekend on a major university campus—such as the University of Southern California (USC)—designed to inspire higher education aspirations and cultivate lifelong self-confidence. Alongside their families, winning students expect to be celebrated at a formal, star-studded awards banquet and ceremony, receiving high-profile recognition, medals, and specialized technology prizes that elevate their educational journeys.
The advocates at Clovernook Center emphasize that beyond physical trophies or technology, the true, lifelong reward for these winners is the profound sense of independence, pride, and belonging that comes from mastering braille. This milestone event in Thika proves that with the right tools, partnerships, and sustainable ecosystems, visual impairment is never a barrier to excellence. eKitabu remains deeply committed to expanding this platform, ensuring that every child's story continues to be written with dignity, hope, and global opportunity.
