Dear Friends,
In May, as Kapsabet Boys High School celebrated 100 years of academic excellence and nation building, eKitabu was honored to be part of this historic milestone by launching the Digital Essay Competition (DEC) 2025 and participating in the English Contest at the school, with over 3,000 students and 45 schools in attendance. This is the first time we have launched DEC outside greater Nairobi, and there could not have been a more fitting venue than Kapsabet Boys.
For over a decade, DEC has empowered learners across Kenya to think critically, express themselves creatively, and engage with digital tools. This year, the addition of the English Contest at Kapsabet Boys deepened our commitment to literacy and inclusive education. We also hosted a book reading session with Rough Silk author Deborah Tendo and a robotics workshop led by Kevin Irungu and Chipurobo, showcasing the power of storytelling and technology.
Perspectives from the launch:
“Students who are participating in the Digital Essay Competition are not only showcasing their writing skills, but they are also immersing themselves in the digital world. Through this platform, they are learning how to use technology creatively and responsibly, preparing themselves for a future where digital literacy is essential. This competition empowers young people to express their ideas, engage with global conversations, and become confident digital citizens.” Mr. John Temba, Director of Education (ICT4E), Ministry of Education
“We write to make sense of the world—of ourselves. As creatives, we’re in a season of mental expansion, and books become our outlet. Whether fact or fiction, every story is a reflection of something real, something felt, something worth telling.” Ms. Deborah Auko Tendo, Rough Silk author
“There is vibrant life at Kapsabet Boys High School, and I believe that after today, you will want to return again and again. We assure you that the competition you are launching today will inspire many from this region of Western Kenya to take part and to emerge as winners.” Mr. Kipchumba Maiyo, Chief Principal, Kapsabet Boys High School
We extend our sincere thanks to Kapsabet Boys High School’s leadership, teachers, and community for graciously welcoming us and allowing eKitabu to host DEC as part of your centenary celebrations. Your collaboration made this momentous launch possible. To the students of Kapsabet Boys and the many other schools who attended: you are the future. Your voices, ideas, and stories matter. Through your participation in DEC and the English Contest, you not only honor your schools’ legacy, but you are shaping the next 100 years of impact and innovation.
Warmest regards,
Will
