In mid-July and August 2021, the eKitabu team visited Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps to train teachers, community assistants, community outreach teachers, primary and secondary school teachers, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) teachers on the utilization of the three Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and to advance inclusive learning in the classroom. eKitabu, in collaboration with Humanity and Inclusion at Kakuma refugee camp in Turkana County and Dadaab refugee camp in Garissa County, trained 116 (78M, 37F) teachers at the camps on an innovative approach to address the damaging impacts of COVID-19 on African education—for children with disability, teachers, parents and caregivers in the refugee camps. This project is in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, one of the largest, private foundations in the world with a mission to advance learning and promote financial inclusion to create an inclusive and equitable world.. Teachers, community assistants, and community outreach teachers were trained on incorporating UDL in their classrooms as well as integrating ICT and utilizing accessible technology in their schools.“The training is resourceful and empowering. An annual writing competition organized by eKitabu that invites students from grade 5 to Form 4 to write their essays and submit them for a chance to win scholarship funds, certificates, national recognition, computing devices, and gift hampers.About Universal Design for Learning (UDL)UDL is a theoretical framework that focuses on assisting teachers in planning to meet students' diverse needs. It guides the development of flexible learning environments and learning spaces that can accommodate individual learning differences. According to learning styles theories, students have diverse needs and learning preferences. Nevertheless, the general curriculum treats them as a homogenous group. UDL thus utilizes multiple approaches to engage learners in the learning process.
