Dear Friends,In February 2022, we held a Virtual Connect for feedback from Kenyan headteachers and teachers in mainstream and special needs schools. The teachers were members of the three cohorts we trained in 2021 in Universal Design for Learning (UDL). This Virtual Connect gave teachers an opportunity to share their experiences, their reflections, and feedback for us on the training and how UDL and accessible digital content are affecting teaching and learning in their schools.Here are a few of the teachers’ comments from the Virtual Connect:“Through the parent support groups, we encourage the parents of children with special needs to form support teams so that it becomes easier for them as they share experiences. We also use such structures to reach out to them to create awareness of digital learning and help us to incorporate it at home.” Ruth Samoei, Kapkoros Fam Primary School teacher, Uasin Gishu County.“I have integrated UDL in my classroom by using experiments, demonstrations, and practicals in lessons plans. This includes the use of pictures, videos, and games in teaching and learning to reduce barriers to learning. It is important to provide appropriate support, making reading materials equally accessible to all learners by presenting the same content in varying materials.” Samson Lepatoiye, Uaso Rongai Primary School in Samburu County.“The teacher training has been very useful. I have incorporated the UDL training that I learned last year in my school and it has really helped improve the performance of my students. We use Kahoot! In our classes to make the lessons interesting.” Vincent Makaya, teacher, Lower Kihara Primary School, Kiambu County.eKitabu is delivering teacher professional development using locally developed accessible digital curriculum content from African publishers in collaboration with the Africa Publishing Innovation Fund (APIF). We are deeply grateful for the learning, relationships and perspectives being generated by this project of the International Publishers Association and Dubai Cares.
