Innovation took center stage as 36 schools gathered for a six-day workshop and competition under Track 14 of the Kenya Science and Engineering Fair (KSEF). This event brought together over 200 students and more than 40 teachers, supported by key partners including eKitabu, ChipuRobo, KSEF, and CEMASTEA, alongside regional coordinators and national judging teams.

The initiative aimed to integrate ChipuRobo-trained students into KSEF by expanding engagement with new schools participating in Track 14. A major milestone was the strengthened collaboration between KSEF and CEMASTEA, laying the groundwork for future student-led STEM programs across the country.

One of the most inspiring outcomes was the rise in female student participation, with many achieving top positions. This marks a significant shift from previous events and reflects the growing inclusivity of the fair, ensuring that learners from underserved and marginalized schools are not left behind. By widening access, the fair is opening doors to STEM opportunities for students across all regions.

The focus on hands-on, project-based learning was evident throughout the competition. Students showcased robots designed to solve real-world challenges, integrating AI and robotics into practical solutions for everyday life. This growing emphasis on AI literacy is seen as essential for building a national talent pipeline in engineering and innovation.

The fair also revealed performance gaps between top-performing and lower-performing schools, largely influenced by teacher capacity and mentorship. Strong teacher involvement proved critical to student success, underscoring the need for training programs that equip educators to lead STEM initiatives. Plans are underway to support teachers in creating coding clubs and providing reliable guidance in engineering and robotics, ensuring students have consistent opportunities to thrive.

The Kenya Science and Engineering Fair in Garissa was more than a competition—it was a celebration of creativity, inclusion, and innovation. By empowering both students and teachers, and embedding AI and robotics into learning, Kenya is nurturing a generation of young innovators ready to tackle challenges and shape solutions for the future.
